Visit the Bonaire donkey sanctuary

An unforgettable experience with over 800 curious donkeys

At Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire, you'll enjoy a heartwarming encounter with our friendly donkeys. In our park, donkeys live in peace and freedom, roaming around in a safe, natural environment. Drive your own car or scooter through the park, stop along the way, and feed the donkeys hay which is available at the entrance. The donkeys are friendly and curious, and often love being petted. This is also a wonderful and educational experience for children, too.

At the end of your visit, relax with a drink on our terrace next to the gift shop. We are located at 77 Kaya IR. Randolph Statius van Eps, Kralendijk, Caribbean Netherlands.

RESERVATIONS ARE NOT REQUIRED

Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Last admission is at 3:00 PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy your visit. Feel free to drop by spontaneously; no reservations are required. Tickets are available at the entrance, and all proceeds go towards the care of our donkeys.

Explore the park by car, golf cart, scooter, or bicycle, or simply take a stroll (Quad bikes are not allowed). Driving around gives you the unique opportunity to admire the donkeys in their natural habitat.

The curious animals are happy to approach you and sometimes poke their noses through your car window, guaranteed success for making dozens of new friends!

The care meadow is accessible only on foot. Here you’ll meet donkeys needing extra attention, such as those recovering from injury or illness, as well as mothers with foals and bottle-fed orphans.

We also have a beautiful garden where you can admire iguanas, tortoises, and flamingos. End your visit on the cozy terrace under a palm-leaf palapa roof, overlooking the salt lake. From here, you have a magnificent view (especially during the rainy season) of our salt lake, where wild flamingos are often spotted.

OUR CARE AND MOMMY MEADOW

From emergency shelter to cuddle spot

The care meadow is the first stop for donkeys in need. Donkeys who are sick, injured, or orphaned, often straight from the streets, come here. In this protected environment, they receive peace, medical care, and, above all, plenty of love. Depending on their needs, they stay here for a few weeks or sometimes even several months, until they are strong enough to move to one of the other pastures or the park, where they can enjoy their new lives with their peers. Within the care pasture is a special area we call the "mommy meadow" Here, we have set up three separate enclosures:

  • For orphaned donkeys that need extra attention

  • For donkey mothers with their foals

  • And for pregnant donkeys that have just been brought in

A special place, where every donkey gets a new chance.

OUR SENIOR MEADOW

In our special senior meadow, live the oldest donkeys of the park, all 30 years or older. At the moment, about 55 donkeys live in this special meadow. Here they receive all the peace and care they need at this stage of life.

Our oldest donkey is Beppie, now already 48 years old. A remarkable resident is Danki, a blind donkey who, despite her disability, effortlessly finds her way. As shown in the video next to this text, she even knows exactly how to reach the electric brush! She arrived with us as a severely abused donkey and was named after the Papiamentu word for “thank you,” a tribute to her resilience. Due to severe eye injuries she lost her sight, but in the familiar surroundings of this meadow she lives relaxed and safe. Another beloved resident is Wela (which means "grandma" in Papiamento), who is blind in one eye.

The donkeys in this pasture are fed a special diet. Some have lost their teeth and therefore eat a special mash or a 18+ senior feed from Pavo, which we import specifically from the Netherlands.

OUR STORE

In our shop near the exit, you'll find fun and original gifts: from donkey toys and postcards to t-shirts, mugs, and jewelry. Everything is inspired by our lovely residents.

The proceeds from each product go directly to the care of the donkeys in the park. So, by buying a nice donkey gift, you automatically support their welfare.

Take home a souvenir, and help create a better life for the donkeys!

FEED THE DONKEYS HAY

Want to treat the donkeys? You can!

We sell 18-kilo (40-lb) bales of hay for $30, available only to visitors with a pick-up truck.

Place the bale in the back of your truck and, once you reach the lookout tower, you can feed the donkeys yourself, straight from your pick-up. A special experience for you, and a real feast for the donkeys!
