That at the moment more than 400 donkeys enjoy a safe life in our sanctuary.

That we need about 430 kilograms of horse food each day, based on the number of donkeys that are currently in our sanctuary. That is 156.000 kilograms a year! Once every seven weeks we have a sea container full with horse food (that is 21.000 kilograms) coming from Holland to Bonaire. All together food and transportation cost us minimal 82.500 US Dollars a year.

That we also need 15 bundles of hay each day for the donkeys. That makes 5.500 bundles of hay a year. At this moment we pay 6,75 US Dollars a piece, so that means a yearly cost of about 37.000 US Dollars.

That we daily need many litres of drinking water for the donkeys, for which we pay about 5.000 US Dollars a year to the water company.

That we also have to pay the veterinarian: for castrations, for putting donkeys to sleep, for medical care, etc.

So that only to pay for the water, food and hay we at least need 126.500 US Dollars a year. And that is not speaking of all other costs…

That we need 600 tubes of anti-parasite treatment a year, that fortunately are all donated to us by Virbac in the Netherlands. And that all buckets of foal milk that we need to bottle feed the orphaned foals are given to us by Pavo in the Netherlands;

That still about 150 donkeys live on the streets of Bonaire and we would like to save them as well to have a structural solution for the ‘donkey problem’, but we do not have money to do so. So unfortunately all we can do now is to help only the injured and ill donkeys on the streets. But of course we would rather prevent them from getting ill or wounded.
