Pancho

Pancho arrived at Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire being a foal of approximately 8 months. He was hit by a car and x-rays showed a double fracture in his front-leg. Although his leg recovered, it stayed crooked. But Pancho is able to walk, run and play to his heart’s content!

Star

Star walked together with two big stallions on the streets, near the police station in Rincon. As the newspaper mentioned that donkeys in Rincon were a nuisance, we tried to catch them. Star was tempted by a piece of bread we offered her, so we were able to put on a head collar and take her to the sanctuary in our trailer. The stallions once looked back at her and then swiftly got away. Star is probably born in 2007.

Sunday

Sunday gave birth to a wonderful foal, born on a sunday morning in the area of North Salina. Too bad children tried to steal her baby away and it was also attacked by dogs. Sunday defended her new born child all day long with might and main. Only in the evening we were finally called in for help. The colt was already badly weakened then. Despite all our efforts to save it, it died that same night. Sunday painfully ‘cried’ for her child.

Quinn

When Quinn was a little colt, he and his mother lived in the wild. His mother was clearly starving, so we decided to catch her and her child. The badly weakened mother was willing to let us take her, but she did not eat at all. We immediately called in the vet to give her medical care. Unfortunately she died the next day and we had to bottle feed Quinn. In our special meadow for orphans, he became close friends with foals Grace and Gioia.

Grace

Tourists told us about a dead donkey on the road to Rincon. We went over to take a look and found a little foal at the side of the road. She was waiting for her mother, that sadly would never return. Although Grace was already dehydrated, fortunately we were able to save her. Grace is one of the most waggish donkeys in our sanctuary and a characterful little lady.
